National Will Register

We are delighted to announce that Barrett & Co have joined Certainty,  the National Will Register. This is a national register which records the existence of your original Will at Barrett & Co. Your actual original Will remains with us in Deeds Storage and all details about the contents of your Will remain confidential.

On production of an official death certificate, a search can be made electronically on the National Will Register. When a positive search is made, Barrett & Co (not the searcher) are notified, and we then make contact with the searcher. We have a very strict procedure when asked to discuss, disclose or release a Will.

Over 1,600-member law firms are part of the scheme.

Why Register?

In a recent survey, 67% of people in the UK did not know where to find their parents’ Wills. The passage of time, house moves, a new Will and new relationships are all contributing factors to your family not being able to find your Will when you pass on.

When your Will is needed, the register gives you peace of mind ensuring that your loved ones can quickly and easily locate your Will.

What Does the Register Do?

  • It allows your family to locate your Will when you pass on
  • It records that your Will is held by Barrett & Co
  • It ensures that your last wishes are respected and gives you extra peace of mind.

What Happens If I Don’t Register?

  • The existence of your Will and your last wishes may not ever be known and in such cases the laws of intestacy apply which may not reflect your wishes.
  • Family disputes and arguments can occur

How Do I Register?

  • We have registered the existence of all Wills created prior to 2020 automatically
  • For Wills made after 2020 your solicitor will discuss this with you and we are able to offer a reduced registration fee of £15 & VAT.
