Best Estate Planning Solicitors In Reading 2020

We are delighted to announce that Barrett and Co has once again been rated as one of the three best estate planning solicitors in Reading.

Three Best Rated  gave Barrett and Co’s Hilary Buckle five stars and have rated us as one of the best in Reading. Three Best Rated is an independent website and we have paid nothing towards this listing.

We have a strong team at Barrett and Co with Hilary Buckle leading the team of private client solicitors who deal with estate planning, wills, probate and power of attorney.

Estate Planning and Trusts

Making a Will or a Trust is your opportunity to ensure your assets pass to the people you wish to receive them. Estate planning can enable you to reduce the amount of tax you might otherwise pay. It is also important to think about how setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney might help if you become unable to manage your affairs due to illness or infirmity.

Inheritance Tax – Claiming Allowances and exemptions

Inheritance Tax is also often a concern and we can advise and assist Executors to complete the HMRC forms that are required, advise on claims for the transfer of the Nil Rate Band and the Residential Nil Rate Band on the second spouse or civil partner’s death, and provide guidance on the payment of Inheritance Tax where applicable.

Where the person who died has left the entire or part of the estate to charity, we are able to deal with the relevant charities and ensure that their specific requirements with regard to the administration are satisfied, and also ensure that the appropriate inheritance tax grossing up calculations are applied where necessary.

Discretionary Trusts

Where a married couple made Wills designed to save Inheritance Tax, often there is a Discretionary Trust over the estate of the first to die and we can advise on the various options available to the surviving spouse.

Changing a Will after death

There can also be situations where Inheritance Tax is payable on the estate but a post-death variation of the distribution of the estate could reduce the amount of tax, or there may be some other reason to vary the estate, such as to avoid or settle a family dispute.

We are able to advise on this and prepare the required legal documentation.
