You may have never heard of this acronym being used but it is an important one in the context of contentious probate and trust matters, especially if you are considering who will represent you.
ACTAPS stands for the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists and was founded around 20 years ago with various objectives in mind. These objectives include providing a place for specialists in contentious trusts and probate work to share knowledge and exchange experiences, for educational purposes, to promote good practice in this area of law and to encourage alternative dispute resolution. A further and noteworthy objective was to develop a representative function for governmental and judicial bodies.
ACTAPS founding members included some of the top barristers and law firms in the UK.
To become a member of ACTAPS you must be a solicitor or legal executive with significant experience in this area; at least 5 years post qualification practice combined with at least 50% of your regular work falling within this specialist area. Therefore, only solicitors or legal executives who are at the forefront of this area of law are accepted.
There are only 6 ACTAPS members in Reading, all from leading firms.
At Barrett and Co we are proud to have a strong contentious probate team which includes our senior partner, Hilary Buckle, who is one of these 6 members based in Reading, together with Justin Sadler, head of the Dispute Resolution team at Barrett & Co..
