We are holding an information session at our offices at 54 Queens Road, Reading on Tuesday 3rd March 2020 at 11:30am.
This is open to anyone who would like to become a Dementia Friend. The session lasts 45-60 minutes and is absolutely free, so all are welcome. Places are offered on a first-come-first-served basis so please get in touch as soon as possible if you would like to come along.
The information session will be given by Jane Whitfield, one of our senior solicitors who is also a Dementia Friends Champion.
The Alzheimer’s Society’s “Dementia Friends” programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition. Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help your community.
Too many people affected by dementia feel that society fails to understand the condition they live with. Dementia Friends help by raising awareness and understanding, so that people living with dementia can continue to live in the way they want.
The word “dementia” describes a set of symptoms that may include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These changes are often small to start with but, for someone living with dementia, they have become severe enough to affect daily life. A person living with dementia may also experience changes in their mood or behaviour.
It is true that more people over 65 have dementia, but it is not exclusively an older person’s disease; younger people get dementia too.
The Dementia Friends programme allows you to put yourself in the shoes of someone living with the condition, and helps you to turn your understanding into action. From visiting someone you know living with dementia, to being more patient in a shop queue, every action counts.
So, who can be a Dementia Friend? Answer – everyone! Dementia Friends is open to anyone who wants to help people with dementia in their community.
