The alarm was blaring and I looked at the time.. it was only 3:50 am. I sat there for a few minutes letting my eyes adjust to the light, feeling a little excited and sick all at once from not sleeping well earlier. The day was just getting started.
On 21st June 2019, I took part with Thomas Horton of Vail Williams and Ashley Hull of Beaufort Financial in a 3 ball, 9-hole shotgun start individual stableford event which took place at the beautiful grounds of Dummer Golf Club in Basingstoke, in aid of Ark Cancer Centre Charity. Suitably named ‘ArkDay’, a whole day of different events took place all over Basingstoke and was aimed at raising money for building a new cancer research centre.
At 5:30 am, the horn went off and we all set off in groups of threes around our designated 9. With some shots good and some shots bad, I was lucky not to have lost any balls. Surprisingly (and probably due to my high handicap), the event was solely based on a points system.. somehow I managed to come in third.
Regardless of who played well or didn’t, golf is incredibly difficult, technically and mentally and at any time you could be the best or the worst player on the course. The most important thing was that we were doing it for a great cause and were lucky enough to do so on a smashing sunny morning as well.
