Jane Whitfield (pictured, second from the left), a Senior Solicitor in our Private Client department, was part of a dynamic team of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Law Society’s Executive Committee that masterminded the annual Legal Excellence Awards ceremony, which this year took place on 15 June 2018 at The Spires Hotel in Oxford.
Mr Joe Egan, the President of the national Law Society (pictured on the far left) gave the keynote speech and presented the winning candidates with their awards. He also presented the members of the organising team with enormous bouquets of flowers. Thankfully, no-one from that team had planned on using public transport to get home that evening.
The competition for the awards was intense, providing the judges with difficult choices between the candidates to find a winner in each category. The judges were drawn from the event’s sponsors, including The University of Law at Reading, Beaufort Asset Management, and Hays Legal.
The categories of awards this year were: Lawyer of the Year, Junior Lawyer of the Year, Pro Bono / Corporate Social Responsibility award, Solicitors-Advocate of the Year, Legal Team of the Year, and the President’s Award.
Jane’s role had been to prepare a shortlist of finalists, and then to co-ordinate with the judges to reach a final decision regarding the winning candidates. Jane also prepared the finalists’ brochure and other publicity material for the awards dinner itself.
The publicity leading up to the annual dinner involved Jane in a fast but steeps learning curve on how to set up, and run, Twitter and Facebook accounts for an organisation.
The winners of the 2018 BB&O Law Society’s Legal Excellence Awards were:
- Lawyer of the Year – Lucy Wood, BP Collins
- Junior Lawyer of the Year – Jennifer Sampson, Royds Withy King
- Pro Bono / Corporate Social Responsibility – Jill Davies, Shoosmiths
- Solicitor-Advocate of the Year – Razi Shah, Appleby Shaw
- Legal Team of the Year – Shoosmiths
