Earlier this month Nick Buckle, one of our trainee solicitors, and Hilary Buckle, Head of the Private Client Department attended the careers fair held at St Joseph’s College, Reading.
St Joseph’s College regularly host a careers fair to enable their senior students to speak to representatives from several professions and people working in and across a wide range of trade and industry, who attend and promote their particular speciality.
Barrett and Co had a stall alongside another firm of Reading solicitors and amongst our literature were some helpful guides to the different ways in which to qualify into the profession, prepared, with first-hand experience, by Nick.
The students and their parents were interested to hear from Nick, details of his previous studies and post-degree experience which had enabled him to secure a training contract and Hilary was able to explain the different areas of law and the enjoyment and intellectual challenge which a career in law can provide.
Many students enquired as to the best subjects to study at school and university if they were contemplating a career in law. There are no strict guidelines about this, although subjects which assist students in developing clear minds and logical thinking, coupled with the ability to express themselves clearly and succinctly, are probably the most helpful.
Overall, it was a very successful evening with between 15 and 20 groups of students and parents visiting our stall. We would like to thank St Joseph’s College for their invitation and look forward to potentially welcoming some of their students to the firm as trainees in the years to come!
