Nigel Walter has been a valued member of the Conveyancing team at Barrett and Co since 1985 and has recently qualified as a Licensed Conveyancer.

Nigel joined Barrett and Co’s Reading Office in 1985 beginning as a general assistant to the residential conveyancers. Following in-house training and greater experience, he moved to the Wokingham Office in 1987 where he continued to represent his own clients and where he gained experience in the running of a branch office.

In 1989, he left the firm to join another practice where he continued in conveyancing, gaining valuable experience in representing clients introduced by Company Relocation agencies. He also took a leading role in the creation and implementation of a computerised conveyancing system.

Following the opening of the firm’s South Oxfordshire office in 1996, Nigel readily accepted the invitation to re-join the firm and to establish a conveyancing department within it, which he did successfully.

Nigel moved back to the Reading Office in September 2012, following a reorganisation of the firm, where he continues to serve the South Oxfordshire area.

For the last 4 years, Nigel has spent part of his time qualifying to become a Licensed Conveyancer. The course is split into 2 parts; foundation (Law of Contract and Land Law) and final (Accounts, Conveyancing Law & Practice, and Landlord & Tenant). The foundation subjects are examined at degree level and the final subjects are professional exams.

A Licensed Conveyancer is a specialist legal professional who has been trained to deal with all aspects of property law. However, rather than being qualified as a solicitor, they will have completed all of the examinations and practical training provided by the Council for Licensed Conveyancers and in addition to this, they will be at least 21 years of age and be considered by the CLC to be a fit and proper person to hold a licence.

Like solicitors and barristers, Licensed Conveyancers are also Commissioners for Oaths. A Commissioner for Oaths is a person appointed by the Lord Chancellor with power to administer oaths or take affidavits.

They are regulated by the Council for Licensed Conveyancers, a body established by the Administration of Justice Act 1985 to maintain consistent standards of professionalism and conduct among persons who practice as Licensed Conveyancers. Licensed Conveyancers are also answerable to the Authorised Conveyancing Practitioners Board.
