Spencer passed the Solicitors Final Exams in 1991 with first class honours. He qualified as a solicitor in the summer of 1993. Before qualification he was already specialising in personal injury (PI) litigation. He has since developed the highest level of expertise in this specialty at the UK's foremost PI and insurance practices. In recent years he has advised the NHS on the ever-increasing complaints and litigation emanating from medical accidents. He has successfully handled catastrophic injury claims and has set up structured settlements for cerebral palsy claimants.
As a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers, Spencer drafted a substantial part of APIL's response to the Law Commission's paper on levels of PI awards. This led to the Law Commission recommending that awards for pain and suffering be doubled. He is also a longstanding member of the Law Society’s Personal Injury Panel, a member of the College of Personal Injury Law and the Oxford Medico-Legal Society.
A highly skilled football player, he also dabbles in other sports such as tennis. He has an interest in writing, and has produced and published legal newsletters. Owing to the demanding nature of his young children, the best-selling novel is probably a long way off!
