Civil Partnership
The Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into effect in December 2005. This enables same sex couples to register their partnership and gain legal recognition by civil partnership.
There are many legal similarities to that of marriage; and many issues will arise dealing with relationship breakdown which may involve children and the sharing of matrimonial or civil partnership assets.
Please see the attached divorce procedure guide – the main differences to that of marriage is that there are four facts to support the irretrievable breakdown of the civil partnership and it is not possible to rely on the fact of adultery.
