The Alzheimer’s Society’s “Dementia Friends” programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way we as a nation think, act and talk about the condition.
A Dementia Friend learns about what it is like to live with dementia, and then turns that understanding into action. Anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend. From telling friends about the Dementia Friends programme, to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts.
We are also delighted that Jane Whitfield, a Senior Solicitor in our Private Client team, has taken the additional step to become a Dementia Friends Champion. Jane hosts Information Sessions locally in the Reading area, with some of the sessions in the near future taking place at Barrett and Co’s offices in central Reading.
A Dementia Friends Champion is a volunteer who encourages others to make a positive difference to people living with dementia in their community. They do this by giving them information about the personal impact of dementia, and what they can do to help.
Dementia Friends Information Sessions are run by Dementia Friends Champions, who are trained and supported by Alzheimer’s Society. Each Information Session lasts around one hour, in which those attending learn more about dementia and how they can help to create dementia‑friendly communities.
Dementia Action Week takes place on 21-27 May and the Alzheimer’s Society is asking everyone to take actions big and small to improve the lives of people affected by dementia.
In the UK, one person develops dementia every three minutes. Yet too many people living with dementia face the condition alone and excluded from society. The Alzheimer’s Society is leading the movement for change, and is determined to create a dementia-friendly UK where people with dementia are included and supported to live the lives they want.
But they cannot achieve this alone. That is why this Dementia Action Week the Alzheimer’s Society is everyone to come together and take small actions that will make a huge difference.
Events will also be taking place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Here at Barrett and Co, we are hoping to host at least one Information Session so that more people can become Dementia Friends.
