Will Aid is a scheme that offers people the opportunity to make a Will at participating solicitors in exchange for a donation to one of nine charities which include Christian Aid, NSPCC and Age UK. Solicitors participating in the scheme waive their fees for these meetings and freely give their time to this scheme. The Will Aid scheme covers basic Wills. The suggested donation for a single Will is £95 and £150 for mirror Wills.
Making a Will is one of the most important things a person can do as it ensures that their estate is divided in accordance with their wishes after their death. Current research shows that around half the UK population do not have a will, meaning their estate is dealt with under the intestacy rules, which may exclude certain people, for example an unmarried partner, from having any entitlement to their estate after they die.
Barrett and Co have been involved in Will Aid for many years and have raised £38,915 in total, over the years, for this worthwhile cause. This money is used to help on a number of charitable projects throughout the world. Some examples of the projects which the firm's fundraising has helped. For example, £90 will help pay for 40 organic gardens in Zambia to receive tomato seeds and £3,700 will pay for the design and materials of a small reservoir in the Andes providing water to a remote Andes village in Bolivia. Overall, the firm's total funding raising efforts has helped fund projects in some of the world's poorest communities, where for example £20,000 pays for the materials to build five hurricane and earthquake resistant house in Haiti.
