Barrett & Co will be walking the Reading Legal Sponsored Walk

A 10km walk on a summer’s evening to raise funds to enable local legal advice charities to help people in desperate need of advice.

Barrett & Co will be walking the Reading Legal Sponsored WalkReading Legal Walk 2016 on September 26th 2016Barrett and Co are once again participating in this year's Reading Legal Walk on 26th September 2016 to raise funds to enable local legal advice charities (including FLAG DV and Reading CAB) to help people in desperate need of advice.

Last year we had a fantasic turnout and we hope to repeat this in 2016.

If you would like to help us make a difference please donate with us:

For the poorest and most vulnerable people in our community, the world is a bureaucratic maze.

Free legal Advice makes a huge difference to the lives of those people. It can rectify the wrongs of bureaucratic blunders and can offset the problems caused by lack of knowledge of the rules and lack of ability to deal with bureaucracy. For instance, it:-

  • Prevents families being made homeless
  • Prevents destitution
  • Helps older people to gain the support to which they are entitled.

There are also people in our community only too willing to exploit the vulnerable or to treat people badly because of their difference. Legal advice centres combat exploitation and discrimination. For instance they :-

  • Help people (mainly women and children) who have been trafficked for domestic servitude or prostitution.
  • Help people who are being paid less than the minimum legal wage.
  • Help people who have been unfairly dismissed or who are discriminated against at work.
  • Help people who are suffering domestic violence

The need for free legal advice centres has grown in the past few years. The recession has increased poverty and reduced support services. Meanwhile funding for the advice centres themselves has reduced particularly since the 2013 removal of much of the legal aid for social welfare legal advice.

So charity and philanthropy have increased in importance for the well-being of those in need and the Legal Walk will raise very valuable funds to aid that cause.

We simply can’t overcome the effects of the huge reduction in government and local authority funding over the past few years. What we can do is to ensure that many of the people most in need get help who would otherwise have been denied.
