Hilary's presentation at Age Concern in Twyford

On 15 June, at the request of Gordon Holmes, the centre manager at the Twyford Age Concern Centre, Hilary Buckle presented a talk to the group about Wills and Powers of Attorney.

  • Did you know there are two types of Powers of Attorney?
  • Why it makes sense to invest in legal advice when making your Will

Hilary's presentation at Age Concern in TwyfordHilary outlined to those attending, the benefits of having Powers of Attorney in place, particularly for those who were not in the best of health, whether mentally or physically.  She distinguished between Powers of Attorney for money matters, and Powers of Attorney for health matters:  many people were not aware that there were two types of Power of Attorney and some thought that they were combined into one document.

At the request of the meeting Hilary then spoke further about Wills, which provoked a lively question and answer session when many members took the opportunity of raising queries of concern to them.  They were particularly interested to know which family members would benefit if there was no Will; and in what circumstances people could make a valid claim against an estate following a person’s death.

Many expressed concern about the general level of legal fees.  Hilary acknowledged that the cost of obtaining advice was clearly very relevant, but generally speaking, by consulting an expert you benefit from knowing all the possible risks involved in what you are planning to do and make sure that you execute a document which is exactly right for your needs.

If you are interested in preparing a Will or Power of Attorney or would like to know more about these areas please get in touch with Hilary, the head of our Private Client department, on 0118 958 9711 or hilary@barrettandco.co.uk and Hilary will be happy to arrange a meeting with you.
