The Harpsden WI meets at Harpsden Village Hall on the second Wednesday of each month and actively participates in additional events, trips and activities across the WI network. The chair and committee are involved in WI activities on a wider geographical scale and members are encouraged to get involved to make a real impact on local, national and international issues. The WI remains the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK.
The Harpsden group is lively and represents a broad age range of women.
Jane has given two talks now to Harpsden WI – one in May 2015 about Lasting Powers of Attorney and the other in May 2016 about Wills and Probate. Both meetings included amusing and stimulating visual aids and case studies, prompting spirited discussions and an animated question-and-answer session at the end of each talk.
One of the concerns causing anxiety amongst many of the women during the second of Jane’s talks was the consequences of dying without a valid Will and the often catastrophic effects of the intestacy rules. Also, with the increasing prevalence of second marriages – and therefore second families – parents and grandparents are finding it increasingly difficult to balance everyone’s needs and ensure that all members of the extended family are treated fairly when the estate comes to be distributed.
At the second talk, Jane was also able to provide a brief summary of some of the forthcoming changes to the Inheritance Tax rules, mostly benefitting married couples. With many of the new rules coming into force next April, it proved a useful “heads-up” for the ladies at the meeting.
